Summary
Help amphibians cross roads on their migration routes to their breeding waters.Detailed description
In February and March, hundreds of amphibians travel from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds. On their way they encounter big roads and lots of traffic, like the Nijenoord Allee and Rooseveltweg. Many amphibians are killed on those roads by traffic, before they reach their breeding grounds. That’s why we help toads, frogs and newts cross those roads safely.
What are you going to do?
We help amphibians cross roads half an hou rafter sunset, till maximum 2 hours after sunset. We patrol the roads with a torch, looking for animals. The amphibians that we find, are put in a bucket and bring them to the other side of the road. The peak in amphibian migration is half an hour – 1 hour after sunset. The amount of time a ‘toad shift’ takes exactly, depends on the amount of animals that walk that evening.
If you want to help out, you can put your name on a schedule. So you decide what days you want to help out, there is no obligation for a minimum or maximum amount of days. On your first evening, we make sure an experienced person joins you to explain how we work. There are no toad shifts every day, because the wheather conditions need to meet a certain threshold for the animals to walk.
