Talking Hands is looking for a Treasurer to join our board. As Treasurer, you will be responsible for the foundation’s financial policy and oversight. You will work closely with the other board members and the volunteer supporting our financial administration.
About Talking Hands
Talking Hands is committed to the social inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing people in Uganda. Together with local partners, we work on improving access to education, employment opportunities, and awareness around sign language and equal rights.
The board
As Treasurer, you are part of the board and, together with the other board members, contribute to the direction, policies and continuity of the foundation. You help safeguard the organisation’s financial health and ensure that financial resources are used responsibly and in line with Talking Hands’ objectives.
The day-to-day financial administration is carried out by a separate volunteer. This means that your role as Treasurer focuses primarily on financial oversight, planning, reporting and decision-making.
The role
As Treasurer, you:
- Oversee the foundation’s financial administration and financial position;
- Prepare the annual budget together with the board;
- Coordinate the annual financial closing and financial reporting;
- Ensure that the foundation meets its financial obligations, including those related to its ANBI status;
- Contribute to discussions on project budgets and financial agreements with our local partners in Uganda;
- Carry out spot checks of the financial reports and supporting documentation provided by our partners in Uganda;
- Discuss financial developments and reports with the board;
- Oversee payments and larger or exceptional expenses;
- Maintain contact with the bank and other financial parties when needed;
- Contribute to important financial decisions and the further development of the foundation.
You will work closely with the volunteer supporting the financial administration. This volunteer handles the day-to-day bookkeeping and payments. As Treasurer, you oversee the financial administration and remain responsible as a board member for the foundation’s financial policy and financial management.
What do you bring?
- You would like to contribute to a good cause and make a positive social impact;
- An interest in financial and organisational matters;
- Accuracy, integrity and a sense of responsibility;
- The ability to work independently and maintain an overview;
- Good communication and teamwork skills;
- Experience with financial administration, bookkeeping or financial management is an advantage;
- Previous board experience is welcome, but not required.
You do not need to be an accountant. We are looking for someone who takes financial responsibility seriously, enjoys keeping an overview and would like to contribute to a good cause together with a committed board.
There is room to shape the role further and to contribute your own ideas and initiatives.
Time commitment
The board position can easily be combined with work or other commitments:
- Approximately 2–4 hours per week for board tasks.
To ensure continuity within the board, we are looking for someone who is willing to commit for a longer period of time. The regular board term is four years.
