Reading aloud and bringing the joy of language to a family with children (2-8 years) in a language-poor environment.

The VoorleesExpress is a project where children are read to at home weekly by volunteers. Do you have an affinity with children and are you enthusiastic about language and reading aloud? Are you interested in people with different backgrounds and do you speak fluent Dutch? Then sign up!

What does a reader do?

As a reader, you read aloud weekly to children growing up in a language-poor home environment. You visit the family's home twenty times, on a fixed afternoon at the same time. As a reader, you gradually accustom parents and children to interactive reading and show them how fun reading is. Additionally, you can bring the joy of language into the family in various ways, for example by singing songs, playing games, or doing crafts together. Together with the family, you look at how engaging with language best fits into their home situation and provide the parent(s) with the tools to take over themselves after 20 weeks. The VoorleesExpress is a special and educational experience for both families and readers!

Objectives

The VoorleesExpress has various goals. We want to stimulate children's language development and enjoyment of reading. We introduce the reading ritual to families and provide parents with the tools to enrich the language environment at home. Additionally, we aim to connect people with different socio-cultural backgrounds locally. But above all, participating in the VoorleesExpress is great fun!

Good to know:

  • We start new programs three times a year: in February, September, and November.
  • We apply for a Certificate of Conduct for you free of charge.
  • You can count on guidance during your work.
  • In addition, you participate in the introductory course, interactive reading training, optional reader meetings, and thematic meetings.
  • Reading aloud, including library visits and evaluation, takes an average of 2 hours per week.
