About Humanitas Thuisadministratie
Martin and his wife separated. He was literally out on the street, had no roof over his head, and faced major financial problems.
Martin
"For years I sailed. As a cook on all kinds of ships all over the world. So I didn't see my wife much. When I retired and stayed home permanently, we had grown too far apart. Two years ago, I couldn't take it anymore and just walked out the door. I was homeless and developed serious health problems. I also had no access to the finances, which my wife had always managed. With the help of the housing association, I found this little house after a year. I knew: now I have to get to work on my money problems quickly. The municipality pointed me to Humanitas Home Administration.”
“Volunteer Ellen was my guardian angel. Thanks to her, I got supplementary health insurance again. It had been blocked previously. She also helped pay off my debts. I was able to purchase second-hand furniture for my house; I hadn't had the money for that until then. If no one from Home Administration had been there, things would have ended badly for me.
If I manage to stay physically and financially healthy, I would like to take one more special trip. Preferably to rugged North China. If it doesn't work out, I will simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings here in the neighborhood. And I will think back to all the wonderful trips I have taken.”
Ellen
Ellen heard about Humanitas Home Administration through her work at Rabobank and signed up as a volunteer.
“How can people get into such deep financial trouble? That question fascinates me. I would like to help address this situation. Because if your paperwork isn't in order, it has a significant impact on your life.
I heard about Home Administration through my work at Rabobank. I doubted whether I could manage this alongside my job, family, and caring for my mother. But I got started anyway.
I schedule appointments at times that suit me. And, something I hadn't expected at all: the work brings me peace. “When I am with my participants, helping them organize their paperwork, then my attention is solely focused there.”
No fridge
“When I first came to Martin, his house was almost empty. There was no carpeting, there was no fridge, and he had hardly any clothes. There were two garden chairs. I sat down, swallowed hard, and then got to work. As a volunteer for this project, I noticed immediately that you have to be able to empathize with people and not judge.
In a year's time, we have achieved a lot: Martin is now debt-free. During one of our meetings, I checked his account. I couldn't believe what I saw: he was suddenly deep in the black! The funds from a savings policy that had been terminated due to non-payment had been paid out. I had previously submitted a request for this. He was able to use this to pay off his debts, furnish his house, and buy clothes. It made me proud and happy.”
